2016 Sierra Club Protect Your Vote - Student Organizer Positions
The Sierra Club is seeking students who are passionate about democratic engagement, politically interested and are self-starters to publicize the upcoming election and make real change by helping peers register and vote. The Sierra Club is dedicated to ensuring everyone’s voice is heard in this critical election. As the next generation to inherit this planet and deal with issues involving democracy, inclusiveness and equal protection, young voters have more at stake than anyone. The Sierra Club is helping students gain access to the ballot and increasing youth voter turnout. Our Student Organizers are an integral part of carrying out our program, promoting civic engagement within institutions of higher education across the state. These positions can be structured as paid internships.
As an organizer, you will lead Sierra Club’s on-campus efforts to build power and ensure success. You will also be responsible for meeting goals related to voter registration, voter pledges, and you will carry out specific activities concerning voter education, ballot access, and Get Out The Vote efforts.
Sierra Club, along with our partners, will also provide training and informational materials to assist organizers in their efforts.
● Responsibilities and Goals:
○ Participate in a campus plan by meeting planning deadlines and being an active spokesperson.
○ Carry out voter registration and voter education activities effectively. This includes:
○ Recruiting volunteers to help carry out our program
○ Registering voters on your campus and obtaining vote pledges
○ Leading and organizing get out the vote efforts
○ Complete time logs and conduct check-ins with campus allies and with Sierra Club staff to ensure efforts are on track and that organizers are getting the support they need.
○ Complete a training put on by Sierra Club. Topics will include:
○ Leadership and organizing skills
○ Election law basics and how to remain nonpartisan
Sierra Club will support the program by conducting regular phone and in-person check-ins with organizers. Sierra Club will also produce student voting guides, voting information posters, draft emails, social media, and website content that can be used by organizers during the program.
● Compensation:
○ $250 per week, paid in two installments.
○ Organizers should be prepared to spend 16 to 20 hours per week on the program during the fall semester through Election Day.
